25 Scouts Battled Rain, Cold in Patrol Competition

We had 25 Scouts attend this past weekend at Camp Carpenter. The troop and 4 patrols did extremely well in battling the weather elements on Friday and early Saturday. Rain and drizzle and just plain cold temperatures did not slow us down. The scouts set up camp in the dark and were well prepared with the proper clothing and footwear.
We had a full day of activities on Saturday. The patrols did an outstanding job with breakfast and prepared a good variety of food including; bacon and eggs, sausages, chocolate chip pancakes. Additional activities in the morning were focused on knife and hatchet safety, compass skills, shelter building and a kaber toss.
By midday, the snow-covered camp road turned to slush so deep that vehicles were getting stuck. Frozen Fire Patrol re-enacted the building of the Transcontinental Railroad - half the patrol digging from the west and the other half from the east. The road was passable in time for lunch.
The afternoon included a fire building competition and then it was time for the cooking competition. All of the patrols did well in their menu planning and cooking. We had some outstanding food cooked this past weekend. Not many scout troops go beyond hot dogs/beans and spaghetti! You should all be proud of your efforts in cooking some exceptional food.
Be sure to tell your friends at school that you cooked steak in the outdoors this past weekend! - Greg Anthony
