MSNBC: Scientists say Canyon now 55 not 16 million years old

Troop 19 hike groups lead by Mr. Woodward will investigate
Thirty-eight family members are travelling to the Grand Canyon for a week of backpacking, sight-seeing, and FUN. Our crew leader, Mr. Woodward, started planning last March with a presentation to the troop.
Months of preparation followed with conditioning and equipment check hikes in the White Mts., hike group selection, trail and itinerary planning, travel reservations, SOLO Wilderness First Aid training, menu selection and food preparation.
Tues 4/22,Troop Meet
Theme:       First Aid
Setup:         Frozen Fires
Opening:    Rodents
Closing:      Black Bears
Clean up:   Puma
This meeting continues first aid training in preparation for May 20 Disaster Night, when patrols will compete for best first aid response to a staged disaster.
Tues, scouts will learn what safety precautions to take when they first arrive on the scene, followed by instruction in the ABC's - Airway, Breathing, Circulation, treatment for shock and external bleeding. To BE PREPARED - WE ARE PREPARED, don't miss meeting.
Patrol point competition also continues, with the big question being will the experienced Frozen Fires continue in the dust by the New Scout Patrol, the Pumas, or will the Frozen Fires hold a surprise patrol outing to catch up? And will any patrol earn the coveted National Honor Patrol Award?

Last week's first aid instruction proved timely as later, Nate scraped his knee during a game of Capture the Flag. Dan quicky cleaned, dressed, and bandaged Nate's wound using the troop first aid kit, however the hole in his pants went unrepaired for lack of duct tape in the first aid kit! Note: scout uniform color duct tape needed in first aid kit.

Four groups have been formed based on their ability and interests to hike trails in the South Rim area. The South Rim is about 7000 ft above sea level (Mount Washington elevation is 6288 ft). The average daily temperatures in April are a high of 60 and a low of 32.
Sightseeing side trips are also planned to include pueblos, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, travel to downtown Flagstaff and walk the 1890 old west historic district, and the Wupatiki National Monument

with Mrs. Perkins
Six scouts - Anthony C., Nate, Cody, Ethan, Billy, and Sam have been busy in Mrs. Perkins kitchen, learning proper nutrition, food handling, safety, preparation, and cleanup.
Last Friday at their second meeting, they cooked their first full meal - homemade soup, a main dish, salad, beverage, and dessert (Anthony made some awesome chicken pot pie and molasses cookies!) Four more meetings are scheduled after the Grand Canyon trip to further develop their menu planning, kitchen management, and cooking skills for this merit badge.
Mrs. Perkins is also a counselor for Personal Management and Family Life, both Eagle required merit badges. With all our scouts and the popularity of this merit badge, Troop 19 is lucky to have other Cooking merit badge counselors Mrs. Champagne, Mr. Anthony, and Mr. Leuci to handle the load.
