Scoutmaster Weekly Update           Feb 18, 2008

Klondike Derby Report
We had a great turnout of scouts and leaders this past Saturday on a nice weather day for mid February.  The troop fielded 5 patrols.  At this point in time we have not received the final scores to announce the standings.  I am hopeful we will have this information on Tuesday night.  Thank you to the adults in running the blindfold stretcher carry station.  We had 16 adults helping out.  Probably more adults than several troops fielded for scouts! The station was a big hit with everyone. The patrols were challenged at several different stations, fire building, compass and measurement, outdoor cooking, flag pole lashing/raising, knot obstacle course, shelter building and first aid.

Parents Night and Court of Honor this Tuesday Night
Awards for recent rank advancements and merit badges will be formally recognized on Tuesday night.  The
Camp Director from Camp Bell, will be in attendance and information on the troop week at Camp Bell will be provided.  Plan to attend at 7pm.  We should finish early-around 8:30pm.  Light refreshments have been requested to be brought by each family.

Troop 19 Website

Be sure to visit the troop website at www.troop19.org .  Information on summer camp and a Camp Interest Survey have been posted.  Questions about the troop operation?  Why we do certain things?  The Troop Handbook is a good place to find answers.  Also, pictures of the troop's most recent activities are viewable.

Upcoming Events

Troop Ski Day at Cannon Mountain
Permission slips have been distributed for the one day event at Cannon Mountain.  Tickets are only $20.  Scouts new to skiing/snow boarding should make arrangements to have a parent accompany them.  There is a beginners only area for new skiers and riders that limits access to the rest of the mountain.  Scouts that are capable of skiing/riding the entire mountain will be in buddy groups.

Grand Canyon Trip

10 weeks and counting!

USS Salem and Ship Building Museum Trip

The United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum lets you experience life on board what was once one of the Navy's most powerful class of cruisers in the world. The USS Salem CA-139 is now the worlds only preserved heavy cruiser.  She is moored at her birthplace, the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Our Overnight Adventure offers participants activities that include simulated combat situations such as radar tracking, damage control and simulated fire fighting. Other activities include scavenger hunts, cold water survival, hoisting, and first aid lessons.

Its the hands-on aspect of our program that make us unique.  Our Adventurers get access to areas of the ship off-limits to regular guests. They even sleep in the same bunks used by naval personnel and eat in the same mess decks.   So, are you ready for a Shipboard Adventure?
