Scoutmaster Weekly Update           April 7, 2008

Order of the Arrow (OA) Elections This Tuesday Night!

If your name is on the e-mailed eligibility list and you are interested in the OA and plan to get involved, you can run for the election.  Elections are held once a year.  The troop will be given a short presentation about the Order of the Arrow and then each eligible candidate will decide if he wants to run for election.   Be sure to visit the link on the troop website about Passaconaway Lodge or (click here)and the Order of the Arrow or (click here).

If there is an adult interested in being elected to the OA and has met the camping requirements, contact Rich Filteau.  The troop can submit one adult name (assuming we have at least one scout elected).  Adults that were members of the OA as a youth are encouraged to visit the Passaconaway Lodge website (linked from the troop's homepage) and re-register your status as active.

What is the Order of the Arrow?
The Order of the Arrow (OA), is Scouting's Society of Honor Campers, and exists to promote camping and the spirit of cheerful service throughout the Scouting Community.

What is the Purpose of the Order of the Arrow?
To recognize those campers - Scouts and Scouters - who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant recognition.

To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.

To promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit's camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council.

To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Once a year, Troop 19 elects some of our members into the OA.  The OA is unique in that its new members are elected, not by other OA members, but by you, all our troop members, who know the candidates best.

Both youth and adult members can become OA members. Eligibility requirements for YOUTH are:
1. Under 21 years of age at time of election.
2. Hold at least First Class rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
3. Registered as a member of the Daniel Webster Council, Boy Scouts of America.
4. Endorsement of the Scoutmaster BEFORE the election is held.
5. Completed at least 15 days and nights of camping under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America after joining a troop, within the past two years. This must include at least 6 days and nights of a long-term camp. The remaining 9 nights must be short-term camping, of 1, 2, or three nights in duration.

We had 25 Scouts attend this past weekend at Camp Carpenter.  The troop and patrols did extremely well in battling the weather elements on Friday and early Saturday.  Rain and drizzle and just plain cold temperatures did not slow us down.  The scouts set up camp in the dark and were well prepared with the proper clothing and footwear.  We had a full day of activities on Saturday.  The patrols did an outstanding job with breakfast and prepared a good variety of food including; bacon and eggs, sausages, chocolate chip pancakes.  Additional activities in the morning were focused on knife and hatchet safety, compass skills, shelter building and a kaber toss.  The afternoon included a fire building competition and then it was time for the cooking competition.  All of the patrols did well in their menu planning and cooking.  We had some outstanding food cooked this past weekend.  Not many scout troops go beyond hot dogs/beans and spaghetti!  You should all be proud of your efforts in cooking some exceptional food.  Be sure to tell your friends at school that you cooked steak in the outdoors this past weekend!  We will have more pictures posted on the troop website later this week.
