Scoutmaster Weekly Update           April 21, 2008

GRAND CANYON – WE ARE ON OUR WAY!

Finally, after a year and a half of planning our high adventure trip is ready to go!  Our scouts and leaders have received training in hiking, Leave no Trace wilderness ethics, first aid (many completed a two day Wilderness First Aid Course and CPR), backpacking (cooking, packing light, proper equipment selection), safety (lightning, rattlesnake bites, scorpion stings, heat related dangers, and rock falls).  All the participants took part in multiple shake down hikes for physical and mental conditioning.  Special thanks to our contingent leader, Jim Woodward in organizing the trip and keeping everyone focused.

The patrols will be preparing for a “Disaster Night” to occur on Tuesday, May 20th.  Disaster night is an active hands on patrol competition night dealing with multiple first aid situations.  Many of the victims will be “dressed in realistic first aid” to add to the effect.  Patrols will be scored on how effective they are in treating the victims.  The troop meetings leading up to Disaster Night will be focused on first aid instruction by the Patrol Leaders.

No Troop Meeting during April School Vacation Week (4/29).
