Backpacking Trip Report

This last weekend, 8 scouts and 4 adults completed an overnight backpack in the Hancock mountain region of the White Mountain National Forest.  The hike was 8.6 miles with 2300 feet of elevation gain.  The group started with 7 scouts and 3 adults at the Hancock Trailhead on Saturday morning.  Jeremy and Charlie Sayers started out on Friday night on Wilderness Trailhead and met up with us on the Hancock Loop Trail (9.3 miles).  Jeremy was the completing his last backpack trip for a merit badge.  The group climbed Mount Hancock (4420 feet) and enjoyed stunning views of the Kancamagus Highway while eating lunch.  Three scouts and two adults added on 2 miles and climbed South Hancock before returning to the camping area along the Cedar Brook Trail.  Everyone cooked a backpack dinner meal and retired at darkness with light rain just beginning.  We woke Sunday morning to a light rain which tested our preparation for rain.  After breakfast we hiked out and stopped at McDonald’s for a late breakfast before traveling home.  Scouts worked on map and compass, leave no trace, backpack cooking and hiking skills.   For many of the scouts this was their first backpacking trip.  They should be proud of tackling and completing a 4000 footer!  Check out the troop website to see pictures of this event.  Scouts attending were Garret, Sam, Alex, Jeremy, Lucas, Billy, Brian, and Luke.  Adults on the trip were Cathy Cutter, Charlie Sayers, Sherm Sewell, and Jim Woodward.

Order of the Arrow Meeting this Wednesday Night

The June OA Chapter meeting is this Wednesday starting at 6 in the parking lot behind St. Joseph's Church on West Hollis St. in Nashua.  We will be holding chapter officers' elections, making and shooting atlatls, and having pizza and drinks.

Please bring: Pocket Knife, safety glasses if you have them and Tot'n Chip card

Brendan Bertagnoll, Passaconaway Lodge Chief was elected Seciton NE1A Chief at the Conclave this weekend.  That means that Passaconaway had led the Section for three consecutive years, as Jeff St. Cyr steps down at age 21 after 2 years.  We can be very proud of our Lodge leadership, and it is an honor to know these special young men.  Cameron Eide will step up now as Lodge Chief in Brendan's place, instead of waiting until Sept.  Note: Brendan is also the SPL for our council's National Youth Leadership Training Course at Camp Bell and will be a freshman at Princeton University this fall.

Regards,

Greg Anthony
