Our next event is the troop camping trip on June 18 – 20 at Cardigan Mountain.  Permission slips will be distributed on Tuesday night.  This is a trip for everyone—not just those doing the White Mountain hikes later this summer.  The troop will be planning a high adventure trip out west for next summer (most likely to Yellowstone)—no time like the present to be prepared. The next two troop meetings will continue to be focused on hiking and backpacking skills.

Mt Cardigan, or "Old Baldy", is a relatively short but challenging mountain at 3,121 feet.  It has a completely bald summit that gives hikers a 360 degree view that includes the Whites, the Greens, and the lakes region. The mountain has a fire tower on the summit, but hikers cannot enter unless the ranger invites you in. There are numerous trails up the mountain from all sides.  Our starting point is the AMC Cardigan lodge, located to the east. Just to the north of the Mt Cardigan summit is another peak, called Firescrew, so named because of a corkscrew of fire and smoke that was seen rising from the summit during a fire in 1855.

The goal of the weekend is to prepare for backpacking in the White Mountains later in the summer.  On a backpack campout you are miles from your car, so it is extremely important that you do not forget any gear.  You need to check your stove, tent, cook gear, etc thoroughly before leaving since it is a long way back to the car.  It is also important to have the proper clothing.  Good fitting hiking boots, synthetic socks, non-cotton clothing and rain gear will keep you comfortable and safe.

This weekend we will camp a short distance from our cars, at the base of the mountain in a designated group campsite but will treat it as if we are backpacking.  You must carry in all your gear in a backpack from the parking lot to the campsite.  Meals will be cooked on backpack stoves in groups of 3-4 scouts.  Meals will be backpack type which means no coolers and you need to keep the weight down.  All trash and waste must be packed out in your packs.

On Saturday we will offer hikes for all ability groups.  It is strongly recommended that you hike with your backpack lightly loaded.  This will give you a chance to practice hiking with it and to start building up strength.  Hikes will range from 6 to about 10 miles with about 2000 feet of elevation gain.

 Summer Camp

It is not too late to sign up for summer camp.  Check out the info on the troop website and plan to attend!  A great week of summer fun and a lot better than hanging around Nashua with nothing to doJ

Boston–Portsmouth Air Show - August 28-29

Last Tuesday we handed out information on the Air Show.  We are encouraging families to participate on their own.  Here is some general information.

Are you ready to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America with one of the signature centennial celebrations in the country? On August 28 and 29, The Boston-Portsmouth Air Show will take place at the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. Headlined by the US Navy Blue Angels in their first New Hampshire performance in more than 20 years, the Boston-Portsmouth Air Show promises to offer fun and excitement for the whole family. Other acts include the US Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, Sean D. Tucker, and New England’s own Rob Holland.

Scouts throughout the state are earning their way to the Boston-Portsmouth Air Show by selling tickets, so if you plan on attending, we encourage you to seek out your local Scouting units to purchase tickets. For more information on the Boston-Portsmouth Air Show, please visit www.bostonportsmouthairshow.com.
