Busy Month Ahead—
We have an Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Troop Campout, Troop Court of Honor and the start of our holiday wreath sales this month. The troop campout is in Merrimack at Camp Whip-o-will. Theme is Survival and Emergency Preparedness. Webelos Scouts will be visiting us that weekend. We are also making some adjustments to the patrols in the troop. Our two new Scout patrols will be blended into the experienced Scout Patrols. Our goal is to have each of the newer Scouts be with 2-4 of their friends that joined during the crossover last March.
Tuesday Night Meeting Reminders:
1. Troop Dues ($1/per week)
2. Return troop tents and cooking equipment from the last campout
3. Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class Requirements - this series of videos (which may also be downloaded as podcasts) demonstrate how to fulfill each and every requirement for the first three ranks of Boy Scouting.
4. Patrol Leaders – QM and APL assignments to be done, patrol patch requests, prep for teaching (emergency shelters)
5. Eagle Scout Court of Honor- Sunday, October 10th at 5pm –Matt and Mike Mahoney
6. Troop Court of Honor- October 19th
Hike Report by Mr. James Woodward
Attached are a couple pictures from hike group 2. Hike started with temperatures in the upper 40’s and gusty winds. We did get some clearing at the top and the winds started to die down. Trail conditions were wet, but not bad considering the heavy rain the day before. On the way down off Cannon Mtn, Mrs. Jane Mahoney twisted her knee about 2.25 miles from the end at about 2:40pm. The troop leaders of group 1 did the proper response to the situation. Mrs. Richardson and son went to Lonesome Lake Hut for help. Mr Sewell and scouts kept Jane warm with extra space blankets and layers of clothing. This set up a 5 hour rescue which included members of the Lonesome Lake Hut crew, MIT Outing Club, NH fish and game, and NH search and rescue volunteers. About 30 people were involved in the effort to carry out Mrs. Mahoney in a litter (rescue basket). People took turns 6 at a time carrying. Special handoff passing took place over and around rocks and trees. A lot of effort went in to keeping Jane warm… she was having signs of hyperthermia. Jane was transported to Plymouth Hospital by ambulance and is doing fine.
Key lessons:
- Be prepared for weather. Wear gear for the weather, plus a extra layer or two.
- Be prepared to be stopped for a long time…. Maybe over night. Head lamps, extra food, sleeping bag…etc…
- Scout training did give us the tools to respond properly. Send for help and give first aid.
- It does take a long time to get rescued if hurt in the back country.
- Need to learn from this experience to improve our safety margin.
On a personal note, I got to see and take part in a rescue with a group of trained and untrained volunteers. I’m thankful to the MIT outing club for they excellent job they did in helping as first responders and sticking with the rescue to the end. The AMC crew members of Lonesome Lake Hut which took initial lead in the rescue. The NH search and rescue volunteers were awesome. They started showing up within 1.5 hours of being called. They respond to 50-60 calls a year on a volunteer basis. The NH fish and game, they had 3 rescues going on at the same time Saturday, but still had 6 people respond. The scouts and leaders of Troop 19, who responded well to the situation.
Group 1 hiked Cannon Mountain by way of the Hi-Cannon Trail, down to Lonesome Lake Trail. About 6 miles.
