We are down to the final countdown before the District Klondike Derby. .  The Klondike Derby culminates several months of troop practices in a variety of skills. Although this is a rebuilding year for our troop with more than half the troop membership registered for less than one year, I have a lot of confidence and faith in our scouts to do their best.  Troop 19 has  a strong tradition in successful klondike derby finishes with several patrols each year placing in the top 10 (not to mention a 1st or 2nd place finish).  This is a marquee event where we can show other troops what Troop 19 is all about.

How can you help?

Scouts

·         Attend the freeze-out on Friday night; you help your patrol gain valuable points calculated in the overall scoring. No one freezes. If it is too cold, there is a lodge with heat and running water where you can spend the night.  If you are hungry, the OA Café serves breakfast (bring $). There is a lighted skating rink available to use on Friday night at Lone Pine. Please let your scouts and adults know so they can bring their skates if they would like to take part and make use of the rink.

·         Teamwork- you don’t have to be an expert in all the outdoor skills—your patrol gets half the points at each station based on how well you cooperate and help each other out.

·         Mush! - each patrol needs everyone to help pull their sled through the snow—it can be tiring but many hands and many feet make it less work than if only a few are the mushers.

Leaders-

·         We need your help on Friday night to provide supervision to our scouts during the freeze-out (email the Scoutmaster if you can help here)

·         Saturday support at the troop station (email Nate McManus if you can help here)

Parents-

·         Encourage your son to attend any patrol meetings leading up to the Klondike

·         Set the expectation for attending—this is one of the few required activities we want everyone to participate on.

·         Help with transportation to and from the Klondike (Hollis Rod and Gun Club)

When: Friday February 4th (Freeze-out) and Saturday February 5th.

Lone Pine Hunting Club – Hollis

This year the Freeze-out will count for points towards the final scores!

Yellowstone Trip Update

Be sure to check the troop website frequently for Yellowstone information.  It IS the primary way trip information will be communicated.

Check with the troop treasurer if you are unsure about your payment status.

Updated information on the website includes:

·         Patrol groups updated.

·         WFA training date set and CPR training month set.

·         Troop meeting night training starting in February and running through May set.

·         There has been a estimated cost update.  Because of gas prices going up, airfare a little more than expected, and other small costs increase there has been another payment of $80.00 set for May.  This new payment will be eliminated IF we can lower the costs on other things, but at this time is projected to remain.

·         Shakedown hike dates and requirements set.

See all these changed and more at http://www.troop19.org/Yellowstone_2011/YS-TS2011.htm
